Get Ready for the 3rd Annual Buenos Aires Chili Cook-Off

May 30, 2013

Competitors in the 3rd annual Buenos Aires Chili Cook Off
American, Mario Pensotti and Porteño, Nicolas D’Angelo will be teaming up to make authentic TexMex chili with fresh organic tomatoes.

The Third Annual Buenos Aires Chile Cook-Off is set to take place on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16.

The event attracts hundreds of food lovers looking for a little spice in their life and is a chance to meet new people, gorge on chili and help raise funds for a good cause.

Chili, or chile con carne originates from Texas, when it was still part of Mexico. It is the Lone Star state’s official state dish, but it is virtually unknown in Argentina.

For some reason the chili-based stew brings out a spirit of rivalry in normally easy-going chefs, with hundreds of competitions held each year, mostly in the U.S.

“It’s a macho thing: the spicier your chili, the more satisfied the woman. Or something.” says British author, Daniel Tunnard, a judge at the competition this year.

The Buenos Aires Chili Cook-Off will feature over a dozen varieties of homemade chili available to be tasted by attendees with tickets in denominations of AR$10 and $AR5. Beer, cornbread and desserts will also be available. An international panel of judges will select the top three tastiest chilis, with winners taking home cash prices.

Proceeds from the event will go to Send a Child to School (SACS), an organization started by the Buenos Aires International Newcomers which provides school supplies for needy children.

Last year, the cook off raised AR$13,000, providing 630 children with school supplies for the year.
